A wind turbine is a generator installed on top of a tower that converts wind energy into electricity, to be used in your home, farm or factory.
In a typical Irish premises, the premises is served simultaneously by the turbine and the ESB. If the wind speeds are below 3 m/s (6.7mph or 5.8 knots) there will be no output from the turbine and all of the needed power is purchased from the utility. As wind speed increases the turbines output increases and the amount of power purchased from the utility is proportionally decreased. When the turbine produces more power than the premises needs, it is exported back into the grid. All of this is done automatically. No batteries are required with this system.
